CASE REPORT: USE OF PILATES EXERCISES AS THE PRIMARY INTERVENTION IN TREATMENT OF CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN
Catherine Hodges, DPT
Background and Purpose: Chronic low back pain is a common, disabling and very costly health problem. One-fourth of outpatient physical therapy visits are comprised of patients with low back pain. The purpose of this case report is to describe the use of a primarily pilates-based exercise intervention when treating this population. Case Description: The patient was a 30-year-old female with low back pain persisting greater than two years. The patient participated in a physical therapy for sixteen weeks which consisted of mat and reformer pilates exercises. Outcomes: The patient demonstrated improvement in all outcome measures: pain rating, flexibility, range of motion, strength and the SF-36. Discussion: The patient had relief of pain and met her goals of returning to sitting, walking, sleeping, working out, stair-climbing and participating in sexual activities without increasing low back pain. The use of pilates-based exercise was effective in treating this patient with chronic low back pain and adds to support the use of pilates within the physical therapy realm.
